Winter is the time of the year between autumn and spring. The winter months in the northern hemisphere are characterised by low temperatures. Temperatures below zero cause ground frost and clear air. The weather is mainly characterized by many snowfalls and ice rains. The meteorological winter covers the months of December, January and February.
In winter the nights north of the equator are longer than the days. Many animals hibernate during this time. Despite the cold, the winter sun can also cause skin burns. The snow lying on the ground reflects the radiation, so that sunburns quickly develop, especially at higher altitudes. Winter in the northern hemisphere is always parallel to summer in the southern hemisphere.
